He's always been someone who covered the personalities of politics and those surrounding it as a game.

I think he's worked very hard and created a niche in terms of the WaPo website where none existed. While he is well sourced and I think smart, ultimately his work has never been deep and generally comes across soulless. It's all fun and games to cover the interesting players but when that sort of entertainment value over substance leads to Trump, suddenly it isn't such a harmless exercise.

As a result, the people who care more about the issues hate him and his overchipper personality doesn't help

C'mon, don't bang on my guy Daniel "Steiny" Steinberg, who is the in-house resident "transcriber in chief" for the WaPo, inanely transcribing sports-talk radio interviews for the newspaper, and getting paid a crapload of money in the process for doing that. Back in the 1990s Tony Kornhei$er would have laughed that smarmy, sanctimonious douchebag, Chris Cillizza, out of town, but in this day and age, Cillizza is Tony's in-house ass-kissing sycophant, and that's unfortunate.
