I picked up Season 8 on DVD, there is a good feature which is like an Inside the Episode doc on the final episode that gives a strong explanation on why it went where it did.

Also re-watched the first episode of the season, it was great. I think a lot of Season 8 got overlooked by people's reaction to the last 2 episodes.

HowEVUH, Martin is, charitably, a slow writer. 4 books in 15 years. Might have a few Sopranos-esque delays in between seasons.

A lot of people really hated the end (not me). I wonder if the writers expected the backlash they got (even though they won the Emmy for Best Drama) and a year later if they would have made it different had they known

What's the spin-off gonna be, Jon Snow standing at the Wall all day? The one thing about that punishment that made no sense, is that there is no one there to enforce it. Once he gets to the Wall, who's to stop him from going off again? There is no one there in charge of him.

Same -- Ep 1 didn't grab me at all, but I will find time to watch the rest at some point. It does seem to be shot in very low light levels, which is problematic for my TV.

I got around to House Of The Dragon. It was well made, and tried hard. Too many time jumps and the recasting dragged it down. Not bad for Season 1, but needs to get better in S2. Overall a B.
