My iPhone 4 Home screen.  To take screenshots of your iPhone's display, hold the power and home buttons simultaneously.

I updated both 3GS phones in less than an hour.  The Maps app would not auto-locate for two hours after the update.  Other apps that use auto-locate worked fine.  Wierd, but it's working now.

Video Test.  Sorry it's not more exciting and less jittery.

There is a bug in the ios 4 upgrade that will kill visual voicemail.  The upgrade resets your password so that you cannot access your voicemail.  It also stores any voicemails that it records but does not notify you that they are there.  When you try to access voicemail, there is a stream of "incorrect password" errors.

There is a workaround that will allow you to reset your password and then setup voicemail from scratch.  It's here:

On my way to the car last evening I wondered why the iPhone doesn't make a sound when you turn vibrate off or increase / decrease volume.

Ringer volume is relative to your environment and I had found that quite handy on other phones.

There's now a problem with IOS4 that is draining batteries in 3G and 3GS phones at the rate of 1% every 2 minutes.  Not all phones seem to be afflicted and some are worse than others.  Jobs was asked if there was a problem a couple of days ago and replied "nope."  Lying fuckhole shitnozzle.

My problems started a week after the upgrade.  I've tried every fix out there and nothing has worked.  The only way I can keep a battery charge for more than 6 hours is to turn off email push and bluetooth, and to make sure in multitasking that I turn off every app after I use it.  Word on the street is that a patch will be available in a matter of weeks.  You can downgrade the phone back to 3.1 but you start from scratch installing your apps.  I'll only do that as a last resort.

If you've got a 3G or 3GS, hold off on the OS upgrade until the patch is released and then some.  I upgraded because Apple had never released any product before it was ready.  Wow, did I fuck up.

Looks like Apple really isn't any different from Microsoft.

Here's the 3GS thread:

I have noticed a dark gray spot on my 4's screen that looks like it shouldn't be there.  I had Mrs. Z look and she noticed something which was enough confirmation for me.  Now I need to schedule an appt with a Genius, and hopefully get a swap out.

It's not terrible, but since i can see it, it should't be there.

My 3 had one show up within 6 months of being new -- never really got any worse, but was still annoying.

Any word as to why my phone now chirps like cicadas for 5 seconds after hitting the standby button? Is this a new issue, or has it been seen in the past?

iOS 4.0.1 out now -- rejiggers the reception bar calculator

...also Steve's buying us all bumpers/cases.

From what I've read, the phones delivered in the past couple weeks (including mine) may be model 4.1. Some of the hardware issue may have been improved upon.

I haven't had any issues to speak of, but the phone app is pretty far down the list for me of the ones I use.

Stupid question time.

The recent loss of my iPhone 3GS has put me in the market for a new phone. I was just going to replace it with another 3GS, but should I spend the extra hundski and get a 16GB iPhone 4?

Thanx, I'll hang up and listen.

Also related. Where in iTunes can I tell if our contacts have been backed up?
There's an address book on Mac's.  I'm not sure about PC...maybe Outlook?

Anywho, to answer your other question.  I got my iPhone 4 a week after launch, and have loved every second of it!
