Just WiFi. I just didn't want to give Verizon any more moola.
You don't have to activate it, and even then it's only a month to month service which you can turn on and off from month to month.  Howevah, if you have the means of a creating a portable wi-fi hotspot...

First or second edition?

Julie doesn't know it yet, but she is getting a II for Christmas.    Probably going to put my first edition to shame.
It will.  It is amazing how clunky/chunky the 1 looks next to the 2.

Wife's iPad II has had apparent software issues this week.

At first iBooks was acting strangely, and now if she loads FB or even just starts Safari, it just goes back to the home screen.

Does this sound like an OS issue?  Should I try to wipe the unit and start fresh? ( iirc, there is an option to restore to factory settings)

I would feel better aout diagnosing the problem if I was working with the actual iPad in my hands, but the wife and her iPad and 1,000+ miles away from me at the moment.

I get symptoms like that occasionally on iPad 1.  It usually means that I have too many open apps.  If that doesn't work, I turn it completely off for 5 minutes.

Hers wouldn't even turn on this morning without the "iPad reboot" of holding the power button and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds.

Even though I don't have any critical items on my Ipad 1, it is backed up to that cloud thingy (and once again I am way above my pay grade) whatever the heck that is....if yours is as well, you may want to do the complete restore....we had issues once (about a year ago) and that was the only thing that resolved them.
