Mr. Tony is ready to return to local radio on Monday
January 19, 9:49 AM
Jim Williams-DC Examiner
Tony Kornheiser is an international media
star through his ESPN TV exploits ? Pardon The Interruption
(with debating partner Mike Wilbon) and as part of the Monday
Night Football crew (the most successful show in
cable television history).
That is plenty of exposure and more than a few
things to keep ?Mr. Tony,?busy. However, at 8 a.m.
Monday, he will be back doing local radio on 1500 AM and his many fans
in Washington could not be happier.
There is no morning sports show that has a bigger or more loyal audience
in this area than Kornheiser.
?Mr. Tony? does a radio show like no other. He talks about everything
from his dog Maggie to who is going to win the White House. He covers
sports and touches on all the key local and national issues. In short it is the
smartest, most entertaining talk show in the Baltimore-
Washington area ? period.
I spoke to Kornheiser about his return to local
radio and why he enjoys it so much
?It is my favorite thing to do by far, Kornheiser said. ?I have the freedom
to talk about anything and everything that interests me and that
I think might interest my audience.
On the national show I did for ESPN I didn?t have much fun because talking
to the centerfielder of the Cincinnati Reds did not matter to me.
?In my mind the best radio is local where everyone understands it when
you talk about who has the best crab cakes or how much fun it was playing
golf with Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams. The locals understand
and get involved and that is what makes it great.?
One thing Kornheiser didn?t want to talk about right now was MNF.
ESPN execs are still evaluating the show and any announcements
having to do with the show?s personnel are expected to
come after the Super Bowl and most likely in March or April.
Judging by the interaction between Kornheiser and newcomer Ron
Jaworski, however, it seems like the network got the booth chemistry they
had hoped for from the start. Add to that the success of ?PTI at the Half,?
and two years of record-breaking cable ratings, it would be hard to imagine
that any major changes would happen on MNF.
But for right now Kornheiser, is at home doing local radio.
Welcome back ?Mr. Tony,? you have been missed and we want to know
about Maggie, your kids and most of all who has made you mad over the six
months you have been gone.
