Despite my left wing leaning politics, I have no problem with shops such as Walmart (aka ASDA over here) or any other large stores moving into towns and driving small shops out of business.

My experience is that small shops have poor selections of goods and charge too much.

They charge too much because they are niche.  Wal-Mart can charge what they charge because they are diversified and can make up their profit margins through high volume and other products.

If small shops will ever succeed, they need to kick ass in customer service, an area where Wal-Mart really lacks.
